Marc Jacobs Opens in Bucktown

Marc Time

A year after it was first announced and five months after it was originally scheduled to open, Marc by Marc Jacobs (1714 N. Damen Ave.; 773-276-2998) has arrived. Arguably the biggest shopping story of the past year, the opening of the boutique has inspired nervousness among local shop owners and residents who feared a chain invasion, curiosity about the company’s choice of Bucktown over the Gold Coast, and anticipation about when the store would finally open. The sleek, 4,000-square-foot space—which, together with the BCBG Max Azria next door, transformed a drab brick block into a bastion of polished newness—has exposed ductwork and light blue walls. The line has a younger, more affordable bent than its brother brand, Marc Jacobs, offering the designer’s sense of high style mixed with whimsical exuberance. Where else would a men’s topcoat for $698 mingle with a lipstick pen for $1.50? For women, find a sweet pink-and-blue silk tank dress ($298), a checkered pink-silk baby-doll dress ($378), and more casual pieces like a structured tan cargo shirt ($328). For men, look for a navy pinstripe blazer ($428), argyle sweaters ($138), and thermals ($30). And no mention of Marc Jacobs would be complete without a gush or two about his shoes and purses, such as the glittery pink flat ($305), signature buttery soft leather handbags ($250 to $500), which mingle with more affordable quilted clutches ($44) and Pan Am logo bags ($48). The best surprise is the number of affordable options, such as T-shirts ($35), mini umbrellas ($16), and glittery plastic rings ($4). Our favorite? The white rain boots with “Chicago” printed across the side, for $15.

For the millionth time: Wicker Park extends north to Bloomingdale. It does NOT end one block north of Wirker Park, the park itself, as your come-lately editors think.

Your excuse that you use neighborhoods defined by an simplified online map created by some real estate firm is not a valid excuse for a rag that implies it's "Chicago's Magazine".

Wiki (and countless other REAL Chicago resources) have the correct definition:

"The borders of the neighborhood are generally accepted to be Ashland to the east (at 1600 W), the above-grade Bloomingdale Line to the north (at 1800 N), Division to the south (at 1200 N), and Western Avenue to the west (at 2400 W). Both the East Village and Ukrainian Village are to the south, Humboldt Park is to the west, and Bucktown is to the north."

Oh no! Are you with the Old Wicker Park Committee? Is it really that important? BTW, I live in Wicker Park (and work in real estate)and don't care where they say the new Marc by Marc Jacobs is located. Just glad it's here.

first poster back again: I just think it's sad to ignore history and rewrite the borders... Frankie Machine in Nelson Algren's Man With the Golden Arm played poker in Wicker Park, but now he was apparently in the tenements of Bucktown, since that's where Wabansia is now located.

Sloppy and sad journalism, imo. Then again, perhaps I'm in the minority to care about where and what we came from.

FWIW, I'm 34 and moved to WP in 2000 --- certainly not old school WP Police or Committee or whatever you want to call me. I just think it's cool to have a sense of what went on on our same streets and 'hoods as they became what they are today.
